I must admit I had some trouble trying to compute this headline, because who would ever think WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was trying to launch a music career with Calle 13? Well, that’s not entirely the case. But, when you think of Residente‘s outspoken political views and lyrics, the collaboration does begin to make some sense. Last week, Residente began tweeting to his nearly 5 million followers about his upcoming trip to London on June 12, where he would meet Julian Assange at the Ecuadorean embassy(where he has taken refuge), in an effort to create a song adressing the media manipulation and disinformation.

Yesterday, June 13, Residente and Assange initiated their creative session and accepted lyrics and ideas from his Twitter followers via the hashtag #JulianAssangeCalle13. They also spoke to the people through a live webcam, as they proposed questions and topics regarding “media manipulation, freedom of expression & social media empowerment.”

“Assange just revealed information about what governments are doing. Those who do not support him are attacking their own human rights, fundamental rights,” said Residente in a press release of the unique event.

There is no word whether this collaboration will be featured on Calle 13’s next album, but we are interested to hear how these two men take a hold of social media to give a voice to all.
