“La noche cumple sólo lo que no promete” (the night fulfills only the promises it doesn’t make) is probably one of the best lines in a Latin Alternative song in a long time. Uruguayan master wordsmith Jorge Drexler penned the lyric for “1987,” his memorable collaboration with Bajofondo‘s Juan Campodónico for his side-project Campo.

Nominated for Best Alternative Song in the upcoming Latin Grammys, “1987” was picked as the second single for Campo’s debut, following the South American summer hit “La Marcha Tropical.” The video, directed in part by singer Martín Rivero, shows Campodónico and his band (plenty of familiar faces for Bajofondo fans) rehearsing in somebody’s living room while a space clone of Campodónico in an astronaut suit travels warp speed on his ship as he video-chats with singer-songwriter Drexler. The scene culminates in a close encounter of the third kind that looks straight outta a 1987 sci-fi movie.
