It’s been over a year since the entire music industry has been turned upside down by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but its participants haven’t stopped looking for ways to keep the ball running and generating new ideas to reinvent themselves. That’s how events like LAMC, BOmm, and New Latin Wave have migrated to the online world, giving resources to artists and other industry agents to continue developing their careers and growing their fan base, and next in line is the MIDEM Latin American Forum.
Taking place on March 11-12, MIDEM Latin American Forum is a joint effort between MIDEM and Chile’s LatinX BizarroLab that aims to create business opportunities for artists and industry professionals through a program that comprises networking activities, conversations with experts, and musical performances, and it’s free for anyone who wants to participate.
The forum’s schedule includes a conversation with Colombian superstar Carlos Vives, led by our own Joel Moya; and a dive into the local scenes in Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina, in conjunction with LAMC and featuring people from OCESA, Chilemúsica, Criteria, and Feria Internacional de Música de Buenos Aires.
A special panel focusing on women in the Latin American music industry is also being held, with participation from the likes of Francisca Valenzuela, Ximena Sariñana, and representatives from The Orchard and Colombia’s M3 Music. Leila Cobo, Billboard’s VP/Latin industry lead, is kicking off both days of the forum, using her latest book Decoding Despacito: An Oral History of Latin Music as a launching pad to analyze the current state of the region’s music.
Showcasing on the MIDEM Latin American Forum are mariachi stars Flor de Toloache, Colombian electro-rock outfit Diamante Eléctrico, Mexican folk artist Renee Goust, Argentine pop-rock act Conociendo Rusia and Chilean singer Vesta Lugg, among others.
