São Paulo’s Curumin crossed over to the US audiences when in 2005 he was discovered by Bay Area’s alternative hip-hoppers Blackalicious during their tour through South America and they signed him to their prestigious indie label Quannum Projects.
After two critically acclaimed albums with them and a lot of touring, the half-Japanese Brazilian artist is back with a third album for the US market, this time on Six Degrees Records. Arrocha, the title of said album scheduled to drop on June 5th, shows us a more laid-back side of Curumin, with less of a b-boy stance and more of a chill mood, more song-centric than his beat-centric previous projects. Still, it has it’s funky moments, like “Selvage,” the track we’re giving away as a free download here today.
If you enjoy tropicalia and music that experiments with going beyond the classic boundaries of genres and labels, Curumin’s Arrocha is just for you, it even has some wobbly dubstep bass for of you global bass fanatics. Just don’t assume that because he’s Brazilian his music is gonna be sambodromo-friendly, no crazy batucadas here so leave your sequins thong and feathers at home; this is for the after-after-parties of carnaval, and the rest of the year.
Make sure to catch Curumin live this summer, touring the US (and Canada) along his friend and label-mate (and Remezcla‘s staff current favorite muse) Céu. Full tour dates way below.
