Los Angeles-based electronic duo OYLS has released a music video for their song “Netflix (Your Product Is Too Good)” and it features actor Danny Trejo (Machete) in the starring role.
According to the band, “the song is really about how we cope with our negative feelings, whether they stem from the stress of our daily lives, mental illness, or uncertainty about the world.” In the music video, Trejo plays a “lost soul” binge watching Netflix in the middle of the night in a motel room while eating snacks.
“To have someone of Danny’s stature willing to portray a vulnerable character struggling with his own mind is invaluable to normalizing our conversations about mental health,” OYLS says in a statement. “It really is a huge honor to have him involved.”
During the music video for “Netflix (Your Product Is Too Good),” which is from the band’s third album OYLS (For Your Consideration), Trejo spends his night shirtless on a motel bed with a remote control in hand watching TV, eating lots of microwave popcorn and drinking a can of customized “OLYS Cola.”
Although viewers only get a very short glimpse of what Trejo is watching, he does show various emotions like anger, happiness, sadness and boredom. At one point, he gets out of bed and starts to dance and even leaves the motel room to get another soda from a vending machine.
Some of the song’s lyrics include: “It’s 4 in the morning and I’m binging on shows / I’m a loser. Bad controller, I’m out of control / When I lose myself.”
“We hope to impact the discourse surrounding mental illness,” the band says. “It’s such a stigmatized topic but so many suffer on a daily basis that it really shouldn’t be. Hopefully, we can help make that change.”
