Meet Dengue Dengue Dengue. All the way from Lima, Perú, this duo of ñu-cumbia producers (previously featured on our weekly mixtape column) has just released their debut album, La Alianza Profana, and soon after that came their first video, “Simiolo.”

Besides making some really dope and bass-heavy instrumental cumbias, these guys also excel in arts and crafts: just check out the hand-made cardboard masks they put together for this video.

Well, I don’t think it’s necessary to point out the aesthetic similarities between this and the groundbreaking videos of ZZK’s artists like Frikstailers and Fauna. I’m not accusing anybody of plagiarism, really, I’m just amazed at how some apparently random aesthetic choices (cardboard masks, fluorescent colors) that originally had nothing to do with cumbia, became part of the visual language that goes together with this music in different countries. Interesting, right?
