The soundtrack to Disney’s Latine musical Encanto made history this week by reaching the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. This marks the first time a soundtrack has reached the top position on the chart since Frozen II in 2019, almost three years ago.
According to Billboard, the soundtrack jumped 7-1 positions in its sixth week on the list. It earned 72,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Jan. 6. During this time, the most popular songs were “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure.” The soundtrack dethroned Adele’s 30, which had the top spot for six weeks.
Sure, the soundtrack was released two months ago, but fans have been listening to it non-stop. And, honestly? Same!
Another fan spoke facts when they tweeted in Spanish: “There was a group of people who criticized the Encanto soundtrack and now it is in the few movies that managed to get on Billboard and break the record of Adele so hot.”
Even Luis Miranda, the father of Encanto composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, tweeted in celebration of the achievement by sharing a link to the announcement.
Also announced on Jan. 10, the song about everyone’s favorite clairvoyant rat-man has reached a new peak. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” has returned to the No. 1 spot on Spotify, with over 1.183 million streams. Just last week, Sebastián Yatra’s “Dos Oruguitas” (you know, the song playing during that flashback scene) reached No. 45 on the U.S. Top 50 Spotify chart, at the time, being the only Spanish-language song on the list.
Moreover, Encanto took home the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film last night, beating out other Disney favorites, Luca and Raya and the Last Dragon.
It’s definitely rewarding to see a film that inspired so much magic in all of us become critically acclaimed. And now, if you need me, I’ll be bopping (and sobbing) along to “Surface Pressure.”
