There’s no denying Encanto has cemented its place as a favorite for Disney and soundtrack lovers alike. And now, the film is once again making history as it sells over a million units in album sales. In its entirety, the movie relishes in expressing many of our beloved communities, which is why wins for Encanto feel monumental for us all.
Since Jan. 15, Encanto claimed its No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album charts, having a prolonged and well-deserved stay ever since. It still resides at No. 1, being the first soundtrack to hit this reigning spot in more than two years since Frozen II. With songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, it’s no surprise that songs such as “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” have sat at the No. 1 spot for 10 weeks straight on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, only moving to second this week. Excitingly, it has broken a new record as being the second Disney-animated film to snag a No.1 since Aladdin’s “A Whole New World” in 1993 — a whole three-decades since earning the title once again.
Of course, fans of Encanto are dying over the news, commenting with stan-like tweets about how the soundtrack “ended” different artists and “outsold everybody this year.” Pettiness aside, it is wild that a Disney soundtrack has remained ahead of various artists across genres for this long.
Additionally, the film has also racked up its number of Oscar nominations, including best animated feature, best original score, and best song for “Dos Oruguitas” (Two Caterpillars) written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and sung by Sebastián Yantra.
Until it strikes another record-breaking moment, we’re satisfied with the success it has had in the past year since its release thus far, and we’ll be streaming the album ‘til then! Regardless, Encanto will continue to be celebrated with or without the various wins for years to come.
