2014 is the year of the Kap. We have been following him pretty closely and he’s delivering a ton of product without diminishing quality. Now G is delivering the big one.
Like a Mexican is his much awaited, star-studded mixtape, his main release this year and boy does it deliver. We already know he kills it every time he steps up to the mic, and we have already heard some of these songs before through their videos, but listening to the whole thing, you get a broader idea of what makes Kap unique. He can juxtapose social criticism and humor without the sense of being heavy handed. He can even throw in stereotypes and some words about hip-hop lifestyle with ease, which makes everything more real and topical.
Musical highlights include the first two tracks produced by Bangladesh, where he samples some danzón-like horns to great effect. “That Paper” sounds downright triumphant. In more G news, he’s dropped a video for his remix of “Tatted Like Amigos,” included in Like A Mexican, featuring rap superstars Wiz Khalifa and Kirko Bangz. Not to take away from the original (which features Chief Keef), but Wiz and Bangz give it a new flavor, which Kap uses to give a fresh take on the track. Visually, you get to see the Wizzle Man rapping on boobs, among other scenes of tattoos coming alive.
