PILAR DIAZ- “NOVIA DE SOLDADO”
The beloved lead singer from indie South Cali band Los Abandoned has made a very successful transition to solo singer with her self-released and self-titled album, which came out last year. Her unique sound in this first album delves into Chilean folk rock, sung mostly in Spanish, as well as her trademark ukelele.
Currently, the Van Nuys-raised chilena is recording new material as well as working on other projects such as an animated series. Look for Pilar back at Mucho Wednesdays party at La Cita in downtown Los Angeles in late September. Speaking of which…Instituto Mexicano del Sonido just made a remix of Pilar’s song “Pinata,” which will be debuted live at Mucho Wednesdays tomorrow, Wednesday August 5th.
Upcoming Shows:
Sep 13: Los Angeles – Pilar will be performing at the Ford Amphitheater at a benefit festival for L.A.’s homeless.

MANU CHAO- LA COLIFATA
Makes perfect Manu Chao sense. For the past few years, the globe trotter has been working with patients at Hospital Tiburcio Borda aka La Colifata, a pysychiatric hospital in Buenos Aires. Patients and former patients of La Colifata have been running a radio station for 18 years, as part of the hospital’s innovative approach to help patients create a link to the social world with their own talents and creativity. (“Los Colifatos,” the hospital residents, made an appearance in Manu’s video for “Rainin in Paradize” which was directed by Emir Kusturica.)
Now, Manu Chao has released a “pay what you want” bundle of 20 songs which he recorded at La Colifata, titled Viva La Colifata! and which can be download for free at VivaLaColifata.org . Los Califatos and Manu write on the site: “Se puede uno descargar gratuitamente pa’ llevarlo pa’ su casa, coche, trabajo, cama, escoba, burro o caballo y escuchar lo que dicen y opinan los colifatos a los cuatro vientos del horizonte.”
Upcoming shows:

HELLO SEAHORSE! – “BESTIA”
A new classic. We fell in love with Mexico City’s Hello Seahorse! last year and that fervor consolidated at Austin’s South By Southwest Music Conference (SXSW, above). Now, the trio has released what many are calling the best Latin alternative album of 2009, Bestia. Julieta Venegas is a hardcore fan as well, praising the band’s clear identity and dark sound which will take them far. Although you can only download the title track for now, the full album will soon be on iTunes through Nacional Records.
What we said in March at SXSW: “Lead singer Lo has that whole hot librarian thang going on, and has a classically trained voice (which Remezclera pana Edson commented reminded him of a Disney cartoon, evoking images of birds flying around her… we’re not sure we entirely agree!) The set was definitely more enjoyable if you knew the songs, which we did …and their rendition of “Rapper’s Delight” was pretty awesome. We’re still crushing.”
Upcoming Shows:
Nov 13: Chicago – Opening for Natalia LaFourcade at Logan Square Auditorium.

LOS HOLLYWOOD –
“TE QUIERO TANTO”
The San Diego trio – Heidy (vox, guitar, bass), Gustavo (drums) and Marcos (guitar, bass) – won the regional MySpace Latino Battle of the Bands competition in 2008, and ever since, have been performing heavily in Los Angeles, as well as key shows in Miami and New York. Their self-titled debut EP was produced by Volumen Cero’s Marthin Chan, and a full album is on the way.
Heidy’s intensity on the mic has earned her comparisons to Gwen Stefani, although this free track “Te quiero tanto” is a pretty, subdued ballad that doesn’t showcase her pipes all the way. But wait till you see her onstage, you will be blown away.
Upcoming Shows:
August 6 – Los Angeles: NOHO Arts Center.
August 27- Los angeles: Bordello’s.
Shows in Miami, Chicago are in the works.
