INTERVIEW: LOS MENOR3S on Their Viral ‘BbY WOW’ Dance & Meeting Karol G
Part of the success of Karol G’s global hit “BbY WOW” comes from a viral TikTok dance trend created by rising Venezuelan group LOS MENOR3S. Two of the band’s three members joined Karol G on her Viajando Por El Mundo Tropitour to dance. In an interview with Remezcla, LOS MENOR3S opened up about the trend’s success, meeting Karol G, and introducing more people to their music.
“The reason our dance to ‘BbY WOW’ has gone viral is because we really didn’t think about it,” LOS MENOR3S’ Big Bowe says. “When you think about things too much, they usually don’t work out. We heard the song before. We started recording on our phone and did a little dance to it.”
LOS MENOR3S’ TikTok videos of themselves dancing to Karol G’s “BbY WOW” have inspired thousands of people worldwide to join the trend. Norwegian soccer star Erling Haaland also recently replicated the band’s playful dance moves. The Venezuelan trio consists of Big Bowe, Nego, and Sheba. Big Bowe says he started the trend by recording himself dancing to “BbY WOW” backstage at a Rawayana concert. After his bandmates helped the impromptu dance go viral, Karol G joined the trend.
“Meeting Karol G was crazy,” Sheba recalls. “Obviously, it’s something that you wouldn’t expect to happen, like ever. And then suddenly getting a call from her team and them being like, ‘Hey, we want you guys to show up in Boston and go on stage and do the dance.’ Hearing that was wild. Honestly, we’re super happy that it happened and we’re grateful for the opportunity.”
“BbY WOW,” Karol G’s collaboration with Judeline and Rusowsky, has become the biggest hit from her album No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto. The song spent more than 31 days atop Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart and reached No. 6 on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart. Karol G invited LOS MENOR3S to the Boston stop of her Viajando Por El Mundo Tour on September 12. Big Bowe and Sheba performed the viral dance with her in front of a sold-out stadium crowd. “It was fun,” Big Bowe says of dancing with Karol G. “It’s super random because we’re not dancers. What we do is make music, but we’re really grateful and happy that it happened.”
The “BbY WOW” dance trend has also been a gift for LOS MENOR3S, bringing a significant increase in activity across the band’s social media and music streaming platforms. “On both sides, it’s brought us a lot of incredible attention,” Nego says. “On Karol’s side, a lot of people from her audience have obviously been able to listen to us. They’ve seen our project, and that’s incredible. Our music streams and our followers have gone up, so everything’s good.”
Before creating the “BbY Wow” dance trend, LOS MENOR3S released their debut EP CALLAÍTO SAFARI on August 13. The band blends el movimiento, tropical, and house music in songs such as the alluring title track. “The EP is based on our lifestyle because callaíto means low-key and safari is what we live day and night,” Big Bowe says. “We want to be low-key, but we still want to do the most.” LOS MENOR3S hope to collaborate with Karol G, Pharrell Williams, and Tyler, the Creator in the future. “We’re trying to put Venezuela in a very high spot right now,” Nego adds. “We’re doing some concerts with Rawayana, who are also doing that job well. We’re trying to follow that path.”
