Don’t let the title confuse you. This has nothing to do with Monterrey, Mexico’s band Kinky. Kinky Electric Noise is a mashup artist from Miami, Fl, who doesn’t like to reveal much about his real identity. We only know he’s Colombian (and the “he” bit is just my own assumption, because it could also be a kinky “she” or a “they”) and has been playing with the juxtaposition of cumbia instrumentals and hip-hop vocals since before it became trendy. The only thing in common with Gil Cerezo’s band is the absolute lack of any actual reference to kinky sex in their music.
Anyway, many of K.E.N. tracks have been bouncing freely around the internet and included in plenty of mixtapes and DJ sets for the last three years or so, but this is the first time they are available bundled together, for the wider public, in this free-to-download release compiled by Argentina’s Cabeza Netlabel. There are six tracks total, including my personal favorite, “Yo Me Llamo Cumbia,” a version of the Colombian classic with the talented bilingual MC Ephniko (another Colombian residing in Miami) flowing on the mic.
