First of all as a musician, doing a famous cover song can be a challenge for several obvious reasons. The main one is, it has to sound as good as the original, if not better. If you, the artist, butcher it, you will definitely hear it from a lot of angry people. Los Angeles’ fiesta soul sextet La Santa Cecila, show no fear. In fact, the Latin Grammy nominees exert a playfully seductive version of Soft Cell‘s famed “Tainted Love,” adding their signature soulful, bolero sound while maintaining that captivating groove of the original –a natural pick for the band to cover, I’d say. Off their recent appropriately-titled EP El Valor (meaning courage and value) via Rebeleon Music Group, this latest shoots to similar measures as Cafe Tacvba‘s all-cover album Avalancha de Éxito, featuring other songs by Caifanes, U2, and Lhasa De Sela.
In this video premier, courtesy of Cósmica Artists, directed by Humberto Howard, lead singer La Marisoul is found doodling with red lipstick and paint on black and white head-shot photos of the band. I’m not sure if there’s something else to the video to interpret, like if she’s caught doing something red handed, or something, other than it’s a simple and beautiful video. I highly recommend listening to this song with some good headphones on — that accordion and gypsy-like, low tempo rhythm really transmits a lot of ‘feeling-good’ music to the listener. Smooch.
