EL CUARTETO DE NOS
“El Hijo de Hernández”
Songwriters: Roberto Musso.
Grammy History: Nominated in 2007 for “Yendo A La Casa De Damien” (Best Rock Song).
Notas: El Cuarteto de Nos, despite restructurings, is the oldest active Urguayan band. While losing out to Gustavo Cerati in 2007 for Best Rock Song, El Cuarteto de Nos hopes to bounce back this year in the Best Alternative Song category. The band is also nominated for Best Alternative Album.

HELLO SEAHORSE!
“Criminal”
Songwriters: Fernando Burgos, Gabriel Galvan & Denise Gutierrez.
Grammy History: Nominated in 2009 for “Bestia” (Best Alternative Song).
Notas: Mexican alternative pop band Hello Seahorse! is led by Van Nuys-born Denise Guiterrez (aka Lo Blondo) on vocals and features Fernando Burgos on piano/bass and Gabriel De Leon on drums. The trio, once quartet, continues to grab mainstream attention in North and South America, picking up a Latinoamerica MTV Video Music Award and sharing the stage with The Killers, Jarvis Cocker, and The Beastie Boys. They lost out in this same category in 2009 to no-so-indie Calle 13.

CECI BASTIDA
“Cuando Vuelvas a Caer”
Songwriters: James Bairian, Ceci Bastida, Louis Castle & David Green.
Grammy History: First nomination.
Notas: Ceci Bastida’s “Cuando Vuelvas A Caer” may be featured on her debut solo album Veo La Marea, but she’s no newbie to the American music scene. She was part of the influential Tijuano NO!, been featured on stage at SXSW, and has toured with Julieta Venegas, Girl Talk, Zoe, and Ozomatli. Her 2006 EP burst her onto the music scene and she continues her rise, scoring her first Latin Grammy nomination.

CHOC QUIB TOWN
“De donde vengo yo”
Songwriters: Gloria “Goyo” Martinez, Miguel “Slow” Martinez & Carlos “Tostao” Valencia
Grammy History: Nominated for Best New Artist in 2009.
Notas: ChocQuibTown have been referred to as The Fugees of Colombia. They hail from the Afro-Colombian region of Quibdo, Choco—hence the group name. The hip-hop trio, whose instruments, beats, and dance rhythms are all inspired by their African ancestry, have placed Choco on the map with the release of their U.S. debut album, Oro.

SIG RAGGA
“Resistencia Indígena”
Songwriters: Gustavo Cortés, Ricardo Cortés & Nicolas González.
Grammy History: First nomination.
Notas: Argentine trio Sig Ragga formed a decade ago, and in 2009 released their debut album of the same name. African, Cuban, and other Latin American beats are ever present in the album, produced by Los Pericos pianist Diego Blanco, while keeping their Jamaican/English reggae roots intact.
