Cardi B is joining forces with Rosalía to remix one of the year’s biggest songs. The rapper jumped on a new version of Rosalía’s global hit “Despechá.”
Earlier this week, Rosalía had fans guessing who would appear on the remix of her hit “Despechá.” The song from a deluxe edition of her Motomami album impressively peaked at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart earlier this year. Some guesses were Dominican merengue legend Omega, who claimed back in July that he was allegedly removed from the original version of “Despechá.” Once Cardi B tweeted out a winking face emoji, the singer revealed that she would be on the remix. “Bien perra,” she wrote on Twitter. Cardi B also posted a few photos with the caption, “DESPECHA MALDITOOO.”
Cardi B actually collaborated with Rosalía before — but just as an appearance. The Spanish pop star was featured in Cardi B’s “WAP” music video in 2020 alongside Normani, Latto, and Kylie Jenner.
With the song “Despechá” having influences of merengue music from the Dominican Republic, for Rosalia, it made sense to feature Cardi B, who is of Dominican descent. “I always wanted to work with her. Since [a] long time ago, I wanted to make music with her. And she knows I love her music, and she always supports me too. So I was like, “This song is inspired in Mambo. It’s inspired in musica Dominicana.” And she’s Dominican, so who else is going to understand this better than her,” she told Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.
Towards the halfway point, Cardi B blazes through with her fiery verse. She ups the girl power of Rosalía’s breakup anthem. “This a king, bad b**ch, but the shoes McQueen,” Cardi raps. She also sings in Spanglish is another new verse. “Her energy’s like, oh, the strongest. Her energy’s super pure and strong. I think that everybody can feel that,” added Rosalía in the interview.
This is Cardi B’s second taste of new music this week. On Tuesday, she shared a 7-second preview of a new song that won’t be released. “HERE some scraps since yall STARVING,” Cardi B wrote in her post on Twitter. When asked by a fan why she decided not to release the song, she responded, “I just don’t love it.” Cardi’s second album is expected to be released sometime next year.
