Listen: Rodrigo y Gabriela’s “The Soundmaker” [MEX]

Rodrigo y Gabriela have been pretty quiet these past few years as far as new material is concerned. That silence is now broken with the release of their new single, “The Soundmaker.”

The song is the first new material from the duo since 2009’s 11:11. They got a little sidetracked thanks to some work in Hollywood on the Pirates of the Caribbean and Puss In Boots soundtracks, as well as the Area 52 album of reworked singles.

“The Soundmaker” is the first single from 9 Dead Alive, a concept album that celebrates the lives of nine different historical figures. The song is a tribute to Antonio Torres Jurado, a Spanish guitarist and luthier (lute/string instrument maker). Vintage Guitar Magazine describes him as “the most important guitar maker of the 19th century” and Guitar Salon International claims that he gave the guitar “the figure-of-eight form we now take for granted.” In other words, he’s pretty important.
