Listen: Russian Red’s new song "Casper" [ESP]

Russian Red (aka Lourdes Hernández) has been touted as the Spanish Feist, but on her latest single “Casper,” from upcoming album Agent Cooper she channels many other chanteuses, like Tori Amos, Jehnny Beth (Savages) and even Siouxsie Sioux. But while their musical influences are present, her vocal identity is all her own.

The song is bookended with a punchy, almost 80s post-punk vibe which clashes nicely with the soothing timbre of her voice and longing piano arrangements in between. You will swoon in the soft-spoken parts, and when she wails the lyrics you really feel as if she is pouring herself into them like honey.

“Casper” leaves you wanting more Russian Red; it is masterfully produced and truly showcases Hernández vocal range and ability. Agent Cooper will be released on February 25th, and it could be the album that cements a brand new fan base in the states for Russian Red.
