Here’s How This All-Woman Mariachi Group Wound Up on Tour With The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach

Mariachi Flor De Toloache seems to become more popular with every passing day. Now they’ve connected with one of their most powerful collaborators, a musician who’s bringing them to audiences that the energetic mariachi ensemble will surely captivate.

That collaborator is Dan Auerbach, best known as one half of the blues rock duo The Black Keys. When Auerbach was recording Yours, Dreamily, the debut album of his side project The Arcs, he searched for a mariachi band to contribute to an interlude. Enter Mariachi Flor De Toloache, who blew everybody’s mind in the studio, so much so that The Arcs enlisted their help for roughly half the album, including several vocal takes.

Now The Arcs are taking them on tour, supporting them as well as playing together onstage.

While reflecting on the experience, Flor De Toloache leader Mireya Ramos commented, “With The Arcs, we added our own style, but also tried to match theirs. They were open to our input and that’s how ‘just recording one song’ became ‘be a part of the most of the album, the band and the tour.’”

“We just did what we do best: rock!” says co-founder Shae Fiol. “We showed up ready to play mariachi and sing soulfully. Thankfully, we vibe really well creatively with Dan and Leon [Michels], who we worked with primarily in the studio, and they let us jam out and be ourselves, which is what we do best.”
