¿Serán los dioses del rock en tu idioma?

If any song can turn a raging mosh pit into a cumbia dance floor of hyped-up rockero fans, it’s Caifanes‘ “Negra Tomasa.” We’ve all heard it repetitiously by shitty and not so shitty cover bands, but never in my life I’d thought I see this live by the original songwriters, or anyone (again, if you’re older) for that matter, not even the band. As is, Mexico’s iconic rockers moved fields of moshes with every emotion-filled song they played at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on October 12th. It’s been several times I’ve seen leader and vocalist Saúl Hernández live, perhaps the first time was about ten years ago with Jaguares in Tijuana’s Zona Norte. And every single time, the crowd howled for “La célula que explota” and he never played it, including his last gig here. This time, the entire hypnotized audience sung along it. Caifanes definitely gave it their all and we all felt the love. “Antes de que nos olviden, haremos historia” …. indeed.
