Randy Ortiz Acevedo of iconic perreo duo Jowell y Randy was arrested on Monday (Jan. 9) in Puerto Rico. The boricua singer was taken into custody on domestic violence charges.

The news emerged today that Acevedo was arrested on Monday. A judge in Puerto Rico ruled that day that there was enough evidence against Acevedo to take him in on domestic violence charges. Prosecutor Anthony Oyola revealed that Acevedo was being detained on a $15,000 bond. Acevedo has not yet entered a plea on the charges against him. After posting bond, Acevedo was released from jail. He called the charges against him an “estupidez.”

While being questioned by reporters, Oyola did not get into the specifics of the domestic violence charges filed against Acevedo. He only mentioned that the charges stem from an incident that happened on Jan. 7. Oyola added that Acevedo’s mom testified on his behalf before the charges were approved.

In Oct., Jowell y Randy previewed a new album with their single “Toro.” The song marked the duo’s first major release since the drop of their last album Viva El Perreo in 2020. “That’s going down as one of our best albums we’ve made up until this point,” Jowell told Remezcla about their next LP. “We’re happy, and we’re ready for what’s next.” Last year, Jowell y Randy toured the U.S. and Latin America as special guests on Bad Bunny’s World’s Hottest Tour. The duo have worked together for over 20 years and Acevedo was hopeful for the future.

“It’s been very beautiful to share this journey,” Acevedo told Remezcla at the time. “The respect and tolerance between us have been very important. We support each other. We always put 100 percent of ourselves into this, and I believe that has been the winning formula for us. It’s very cool when the new artists we meet call us legends. That’s due to all the years we’ve been together. We have a very solid brand.”
