There’s a lot of good news for Shakira today. September 29 is being recognized as Shakira Day, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of one of her most beloved albums.
Due to fan requests, Spotify launched a campaign earlier this month to recognize September 29 as #ShakiraDay or #DiaDeShakira. The streaming platform placed billboards of the proposal throughout Colombia. Her global fan base made those hashtags trend on X (formerly known as Twitter). Spotify has since made Shakira Day a reality in Colombia while also naming the pop icon as Equal Global Ambassador.
“When I heard about Shakira Day in Colombia, my initial reaction was total excitement!” Shakira shared in a statement. “It put a smile on my face, and I know my parents will be proud to see it.”
Spotify additionally announced that Shakira has become the platform’s most-streamed female Latine artist of all time. She hit No. 1 twice this past year on Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart. She achieved that feat thanks to her hits “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap and “TQG” alongside fellow Colombian artist Karol G.
September 29 also marks the 25th anniversary of Shakira’s second mainstream album Dónde Están los Ladrones? The LP features her classic hits like “Ciega, Sordomuda,” “Tú,” and “Ojos Así.” It was the iconic music video for the latter that inspired many Latines at the time to get red streaks like hers in their hair. Shakira also belly danced for the first time in that video, which has since become one of her signature moves.
Over 30 years into her career, the Colombian artist is still on top of the world. She has continued to show her versatility as an artist, recently releasing a corrido, “El Jefe,” featuring the Mexican-American group Fuerza Regida. Shakira also became a mermaid in the “Copa Vacía” music video with Colombian heartthrob Manuel Turizo.
