The Quintanilla Family Dispute Raises Questions About Selena’s Estate

More than 30 years after Selena Quintanilla’s death, few posthumous artist legacies have been managed as thoroughly as hers. Now, though, her family—Abraham “A.B.” Quintanilla III and Suzette Quintanilla-Arriaga—has become publicly divided over the alleged management of her estate. This dispute could raise bigger questions about the future of her catalog and image.

The conflict became public on Sept. 1, when A.B. posted on Instagram that he had taken legal action involving his sister, Suzette Quintanilla, as well as “facts and circumstances” related to their late father, Abraham Quintanilla, who died in December 2025. In the post, A.B. wrote that the situation stemmed from “years of accumulated situations, decisions, and circumstances” he had kept private out of “respect” and “loyalty” to his family. He didn’t provide details about the alleged lawsuit, saying he would let the legal process play out.

The following day, Suzette and their mother, Marcella Quintanilla, responded with a statement posted to Selena’s official Instagram account. In it, the two sought to “correct the record,” saying Suzette had never been served with a lawsuit and had received no court-filed complaint, summons, or petition corresponding to the allegations A.B. described, and that they couldn’t locate such a case in publicly available records. They also directly denied accusations of financial misconduct. Their statement said there had been “no theft by Suzette” and that she had not stolen, misappropriated, or improperly taken money or property belonging to A.B., Abraham, Marcella, Chris, Selena’s estate, or any family-owned or jointly owned business.

The statement also addressed rumors that Suzette was selling Selena’s personal belongings, saying she was not and had no intention of doing so. It clarified that any potential sale of an ownership interest in a company was a separate matter and should not be portrayed as selling Selena’s possessions. While A.B. didn’t initially specify his legal action, this seems to be at the center of the dispute.

A.B. responded with another Instagram post headlined “YO NO MIENTO.” He maintained that Suzette and her attorneys had been notified through certified mail, and also accused her of failing to provide requested contracts, documentation, and financial information. He posted a copy of the alleged certified letter. A.B. said his lawyer would provide more details on Friday (9/4).

So far, public-record searches by multiple outlets have not located a lawsuit matching A.B.’s description. That makes the next developments particularly important.

While this is still a developing story, we can’t help but wonder what will happen to Selena’s legacy now that the people responsible for it are on opposite sides of a legal feud. The Quintanilla patriarch, Abraham, spent decades overseeing Selena’s estate after her death, while Suzette later took on a larger role in the family’s business. With Abraham’s death last December, the structure around Selena’s catalog, image, and future projects is changing—and we don’t yet know how. Hopefully, this conflict will lead to a resolution that protects one of the most important figures in Latine music.
