4/20 isn’t only a day of celebration for Cypress Hill fans and stoners alike. Before that it was Tito Puente‘s birthday. Yes, El Rey De Los Timbales was born in New York City on April 20th, 1923, which means he would turn 89 years old today.
To commemorate this special date DC’s funk masters Fort Knox Five are giving away for free, for the first time, an official remix of Puente’s classic “Ran Kan Kan” that was commissioned to them back in 2006. The track was released a year later on a Fort Knox collection of remixes and since then it hasn’t lost any power, it’s still a dancefloor-shaking must on any Latin funk set.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the artists, Fort Knox Five, besides being a party-rocking DJ crew and an infinite source of unbeatable funky remixes, are the guys behind the influential record label Fort Knox Recordings the house of such artist as Empresarios, and Tito Puente, well if you don’t know who that guy is I don’t know what you’re doing here, go google him and learn a thing or two about one of the most influential Latin artists in the history of the United States.
