It’s become clear that Helado Negro is making some of the most interesting and absorbing music videos out there. Whether it’s just his head backed by morphing shapes or stuffed foxes in white rooms, the videos always feel like extensions, mirrors to his project. They’re part of the larger agenda, the aesthetic that defines Roberto Lange’s project. His newest video is no exception.
Today we have “Relatives,” the second video off his third LP, Invisible Life (out on Asthmatic Kitty). Last time around we saw Helado Negro bringing some homegrown flavor by locating “Dance Ghost,” one of the best tracks of the year, in Miami. This time, we have a bevy of images, some contributed by J. Tapia, transposed, looped, and filtered. In “Relatives,” featuring Bear in Heaven’s Jon Philpot, director Zircon Price uses the duo as an anchor, Lange singing in Spanish and Philpot softly in English. Their back and forth, coupled with the spliced images, makes for a nice view.
