As part of the 15th anniversary of Santiago-based label Quemasucabeza-–home to Gepe, Pedropiedra, and Fernando Milagros, among others—is releasing a series of videos in a partnership with the Escuela de Cine de Chile and the production company La Escafandra. The videos show intimate performances from the label’s artists and friends. The first one, released a few days ago, is an exclusive premiere of a new Protistas track, “Función y Guía.”
Filmed under dim lighting in front of a small crowd, the video is a fitting setting for the track, which features Álvaro Solar’s harmonious alto, alongside soft acoustic melodies and percussion. It’s hypnotizing how they manage to sound so emotive with such a minimal set up.
The second video comes from Coiffeur, who sings an acoustic rendition of “Mientras Tanto” off his magnificent 2013 EP, Nada. Unlike the Protistas video, this one is filmed in a public space at the Aeropuerto de Santiago, amidst the passengers and transient inhabitants of a non-place. Not that it needed it, but in this setting and in its acoustic form, “Mientras Tanto” gains an urgency and nostalgia that’s not completely present in the original.
Both videos represent the spirit of creativity, innovation, and reverence to the past that has characterized Quemasucabeza’s roster along the years. Keep em’ coming.
