A mixtape can be many things, but one thing is for sure, a mixtape is more than just random songs put in a particular order. It’s about recontextualizing sounds, giving them a new meaning (sometimes very different from the original) by setting them side by side, or juxtaposed in ingenious ways with others. Best thing about mixtapes, most of them are FREE (!), and they’re a great way to discover new music. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

If the guy on the photo looks familiar to you it’s because the black cannibal is no other than Color Kit of Zizek‘s ragga-cumbia outfit Fauna. Along with this new alter-ego he just launched his parallel career as a DJ with this first mixtape, which doesn’t mean that he’s leaving Fauna behind. Even though the group went through some tragic line-up transformations, Color Kit is still working on new Fauna productions.

But in the meantime, here we have this mixtape that features some of Color Kit’s own productions and remixes along other artists’ music. Not bad at all for a DJ debut, still, transitions are a bit too abrupt. Nevertheless, I don’t think CanibalNegro‘s point was to show off his DJ mixing skills, but to showcase his eclectic style. Fauna’s characteristic 90BPM bass-heavy sound is well represented, but there’s also a lot other stuff, in the more up-tempo end of the scope, that you wouldn’t naturally expect from him. In just about 30 minutes, the mixtape will take you to plenty unexpected places and leave you wondering what the future releases by Fauna will sound like.
