Weekly Mezcolanza: Canyonazo, Gnotes and DJ Ethos

A mixtape can be many things, but one thing is for sure, a mixtape is more than just random songs put in a particular order. It’s about recontextualizing sounds, giving them a new meaning (sometimes very different from the original) by setting them side by side, or juxtaposed in ingenious ways with others. Best thing about mixtapes, most of them are FREE (!), and they’re a great way to discover new music. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Canyonazo, Gnotes and DJ Ethos

MIXTAPE: Subsuelo–Global Bassment Mixtape

There are three DJs involved in this mixtape. Seattle’s Gnotes, who’s also a hip-hop artist, did the remixing and production of all the featured tracks, then El Canyonazo mixed them together into one cohesive piece, and for the final touch, Mexican turntablist extraordinaire DJ Ethos decorated the transitions with his precise scratching skills.

Subsuelo is the name of a global bass recurrent party that takes place Boyle Heights, East LA, hosted by El Canyonazo and his crew, with frequent special guests. In this case, however, is the title of a digital album, a collection of remixes put together by Gnotes, and the above mentioned mixtape to promote that album (which you can download here for free).

LA-born of Cuban decent El Canyonazo (also known as Canyon Cody), besides being a DJ is a scholar in global culture and music and the founder of Gnawledge record label which has released some very interesting material from Flamenco fusion to Afro-Latin to instrumental hip-hop that’s definitely worth checking out and if you live in LA area don’t miss a chance to check out one of his parties.
