Weekly Mezcolanza: Chorizo Funk

A mixtape can be many things, but one thing is for sure, a mixtape is more than just random songs put in a particular order. It’s about recontextualizing sounds, giving them a new meaning (sometimes very different from the original) by setting them side by side, or juxtaposed in ingenious ways with others. Best thing about mixtapes, most of them are FREE (!), and they’re a great way to discover new music. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Chorizo Funk
MIXTAPE: Chorizo Chunks 10 – Afro Latin Mix

Mixtapes recorded live aren’t usually this good. Austin, TX’s Chorizo Funk spins a 50 minute long all vinyl set at his monthly party Body Rock and kills it. A b-boy at heart, Mr. Chorizo is all about funky break beats, but for the latest edition of his party, he focused exclusively on the Latin side of the spectrum –mixing in some new and classic Afro-Latin bangers, from old-school salsa to some solid cumbias and more. All this with the help of Raiders Against the Storm, a local rap group, they drop some shout-outs on the mic and fill in during the transitions.

This is the tenth installment of the Chorizo Chunks mixtape series. It seems that this guy records his sets every time he plays and then shares them online. A great way to guarantee absolute freshness because you know he’s not gonna be repeating the same playlists every month. Beginners and wannabes out there take note.
