A mixtape can be many things, but one thing is for sure, a mixtape is more than just random songs put in a particular order. It’s about recontextualizing sounds, giving them a new meaning (sometimes very different from the original) by setting them side by side, or juxtaposed in ingenious ways with others. Best thing about mixtapes, most of them are FREE (!), and they’re a great way to discover new music. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: Summer Bass
Some of us wish it was summer all year round, and if only we could get more of these summer-inspired mixtapes, like the one here.
Coming all the way from Southern France, DJ Mosca Verde (also known as Greenfly) is one-half of the Spitbastards DJ duo/production team, specialized in remixes and mash-ups of up-tempo, dancefloor-igniting, bass-heavy electropical music.
Summer Bass is a great example of this: going from Brazilian baile funk, to Angolan kuduro, to classic northern Colombian cumbias and more, with excellent transitions and tempo switches. This mixtape should be ideal to turn on the dancefloor at any party this summer.
