Weekly Mezcolanza: Orion & Pagame

A mixtape can be many things, but one thing is for sure, a mixtape is more than just random songs put in a particular order. It’s about recontextualizing sounds, giving them a new meaning (sometimes very different from the original) by setting them side by side, or juxtapozed in ingenious ways with others. Best thing about mixtapes, most of them are FREE (!), and they’re a great way to discover new music. In this new column, we’ll give you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: Subguey Vol. 3
DJ: Orion & Pagame

Hailing from Austin, Texas, Orion is one of the best DJ/producers to come out of the neo-cumbia scene. Now he’s opened new territory creating a whole new dance genre for which he even coined a new word! Remember a while ago we introduced you to the newest dance craze of underground Mexico, the “tribal guarachero” movement, headed by Toy Selectah’s youngest protegés 3Ball MTY? It sounded like techno-cumbia on an E-OD, right? Well, DJ Orion, together with Pagame, has been developing the newest step into the evolution of the hybrid genre, making it even faster and more frenetic. They call it boombahchero.

The third volume of his Subguey (that’s Spanglish for subway, get it?) mixtape series works like an introduction into the boombahchero sound. Starts right from the top, with this past summer’s surprise hit, the soon-to-be-overplayed “We No Speak Americano” by Yolanda Be Cool, in a boosted-tempo version, and from there on he never takes a second to rest, it’s an ongoing rave all the way to the end.

I know it’s not for everyone and it might be a little too much to swallow on a weekday morning (even on a hump day such as this), but give it a chance on a weekend night after hours and all this madness will suddenly make a lot of sense. And for those who dug it, Orion is also selling (you name the price!) a collection of boombahchero edits he did himself.
