Weekly Mezcolanza: The Whooligan

A mixtape can be many things, but one thing is for sure, a mixtape is more than just random songs put in a particular order. It’s about recontextualizing sounds, giving them a new meaning (sometimes very different from the original) by setting them side by side, or juxtaposed in ingenious ways with others. Best thing about mixtapes, most of them are FREE (!), and they’re a great way to discover new music. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: ¡Sandwichería!
DJ: The Whooligan

Julio Galvez, a.k.a. The Whooligan, is an acclaimed DJ/producer and nightlife impresario based in the Bay Area of California, but with national reach. He has performed alongside some of the bigger names in the dance world and although he’s only occasionally involved in the Latin music scene, he can’t deny his roots and good soulful Latin beats always find their way into his eclectic sets.

Here we have his latest mix, ¡Sandwichería!, a DJ set recorded live at the Winter Music Conference in Miami earlier this year. It’s a 40-minute-long, simple but precise mix, opening up with a remixed James Brown classic which sets the tone for a funky set and then quickly starts exploring some upbeat Latin soul (Mongo Santamaría, Rubén Blades), seamlessly blended with other more obscure remixes and mashups.
