The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Bonnz
MIXTAPE: Octubre 2013

Mixtapes by famous bands’ musicians are not meant to showcase beat-matching skills and innovative mixing techniques, but to expand on the band’s influences, helping fans understand where they come from and sometimes surprising us with unexpected selections.

Bonnz! (born Gabriel Galvan de Leon) is known by all Mexican hipsters as the bearded drummer of Hello Seahorse! He is also an accomplished producer but here he’s neither drumming nor producing, he’s just playing music he likes that may or may not have influenced the sound of his band.

Some may be disappointed that he doesn’t include any obscure version of a track by his band somewhere in there. He doesn’t even select any music by any Latino artist, period. Some may be surprised by the inclusion of remixed hip-hop tracks in there (Kanye West, Drake). It’s OK, Bonnz! isn’t trying to prove anything or reinvent the wheel here, he’s simply letting us know what he’s been listening during to the month of October and that’s fine with me.
