Your Mix Fix: Carol C

The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Carol C
MIXTAPE: Moonlight Mix

So, last week I was writing this post about a new song featuring Si*Sé singer Carol C and it reminded me of how huge of a crush I had on her back in the day and how I used to go see them every time they came to town. And then I recalled this one time I saw her doing a DJ set, and she was great. I mean, she wasn’t super skillful doing turntablist tricks or anything like that, but she had great taste and that’s what mattered. So I wondered if she still DJ’d and I found her SoundCloud with her most recent mix, just a few weeks old, and I was like “yay!”

Now we live in an era when everybody and their tías claim to be DJs so there’re thousands of famous singers and musicians (and celebrities in general) who go around doing DJ sets as a way to make an easy extra buck. But that’s only because digital technology democratized the access to the craft. Back in those days when I saw Carol doing it, people still had to carry heavy crates of hard-to-find vinyl records, so it meant much more of a commitment. Only people who were serious about DJing used to get into it. So mad props to her.

Here we have the still beautiful Carol C doing her thing for an hour plus change. It’s all laid-back and chill-out stuff, which totally makes sense coming from her (no Latin-flavored beats/Spanish lyrics, unfortunately). Even if you’re not in that particular mood today, download it or bookmark it and then play as background music next time you invite a hot date for dinner at your place.
