Your Mix Fix: Chico Sonido

The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Chico Sonido
MIXTAPE: Sonido Disco

If, as they say, disco sucks, then disco hits translated to Spanish in subpar versions have to suck exponentially more. Unless, it’s the master of the Latino bizarre himself, Chico Sonido, who’s mixing it and we are able to take it with some tongue-in-cheek sense of humor.

Back in the glamorous days of disco it was quite common throughout Latin America to release cover versions of the season’s dance floor hits with clumsily translated lyrics. Most of them were signed by ghost artists with fake names or novelty acts destined to forever remain in the one-hit-wonder category. If you ask the people who lived through that era, they’ll probably have a hard time publicly admitting that they actually danced to this, they’ll feel embarrassed.

However, when revisiting those long-forgotten tracks now and re-contextualizing them from the point of view of a DJ who specializes in digging out oscure Latin vinyl, the whole thing takes a new life and finds new sense. It’s still ridiculous at times (many of those porno soundtrack sounds paired with erotic lyrics) but it can also be highly entertaining and honestly, compared to the crap they currently release as Top40 dance music, this doesn’t suck that much after all.

Chico Sonido is currently working on his second album, I wonder if he plans ton include some of this porno disco en español on it.
