The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: Empresarios’ Sabor del Año

It was a prolific year for DC’s Empresarios. The band started with an acclaimed debut album on Fort Knox records, followed by a stream of top-notch remixes and as if that wasn’t enough a follow-up EP with four new tracks. In just 12 months of hard work they positioned themselves as one of the most vibrant forces in US-based party-oriented Latin music.

And to celebrate this and close the year in a high note, they leave us with this great party mix tape, ideal for NYE’s parties. Put together by DC’s DJ Arsam “Sabor Del Año” includes most of the latest releases by Empresarios, plus some exclusive remixes, blended with other must-have Latin-party anthems of 2011 like Quantic‘s “Un Canto Pa Mi Tierra” and Captain Planet‘s “Dame Agua” among others, making it into a sort of time-capsule mix tape of the year condensed in just about an hour and mixed with precision. Definitely worth a download.
