The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Daferwa
MIXTAPE: Moctezuma Mix

Born in Germany to Mexican parents, Daferwa, a.k.a. Daniel Fernando Whal, dedicated his latest mixtape to celebrating both his heritage and versatility.

Moctezuma Mix starts with classic cumbias in remixed versions and from there it takes us in multiple directions, from Brazilian baile funk to dubstep to nondescript EDM and plenty more, and once your attention starts waning, it brings it back to cumbia.

Daniel lives in Cologne, where he hosts the Mash It Up! party series, which has featured all of the international luminaries of global bass (Toy Selectah, Uproot Andy, and Munchi). Good job bringing some tropical heat to the cold-ass Rhine.
