The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: DJ Gozar (Subsuelo)

MIXTAPE: Poly-Ritmo

Subsuelo is basically the coolest underground (that’s what subsuelo means) party in Los Angeles, if you’re into progressive global dance music. We had featured them before on this column, but this is the first time we bring you a mixtape by subsuelista DJ Gozar, a.k.a. Josh Weiss. He put together this fresh mix to support his crew’s upcoming visit to New York City during the events-packed week of LAMC and we are premiering it on Remezcla!

So yeah, if you plan to be in New York next week, this is your chance to get a first-hand impression of what’s been cooking for this past couple of years in the Boyle Heights barrio that has everybody buzzing about. If you’re not, well, listening to this mixtape can be the best next thing.

Opening up with a hilarious sonidero-style announcement, the mixtape quickly dives into some exotic tropical psychedelia including plenty of obscure gems and remixes from all over the world intertwined with some familiar names for the Remezcla habitual readers (Batida, Pernett, José Márquez and of course Ana Tijoux remixed by Captain Planet). Big ups to DJ Gozar for hooking up us first with this great mixtape, see you next week in New York buddy!
