The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Nombre Apellido

MIXTAPE: Veranito Ondeado

Why bother coming up with an imaginative DJ name or even a last name, when you can simply call yourself DJ Nombre Apellido? On his profile description, Nombre Apellido claims he comes “from the internet” and he plays “generic dance music.”

It seem like he doesn’t wanna reveal much about his real self. But rumor has it that he’s in fact from Tijuana and he’s also publicly known as a member of the trio Los Macuanos. As a DJ, he seems focused on dancefloor-packing beats regardless of their denomination, tribal, techno, retro-house, latintronica, whatever, anything goes, name it what you will. It doesn’t matter. The goal is to keep you trapped in the dancefloor for the rest of the night and/or to keep you company on your headphones and push you forward while you do your workout routine at the gym.

This 34-plus minute all digital mix is the last Summer-themed mixtape we’ll be featuring this season, since well, summer is practically over. So yeah, enjoy it while you still can, from next week on it will all be gloomy, boring, sad autumn mixtapes.
