The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Frikstailers

MIXTAPE: ZZK Mixtape Vol. 14

The craziest, genius, visionaries of the ZZK camp have honored us, simple earthlings, with one of their sporadic visits to our planet and left behind some of the music they’ve been sampling during their travels through space and time.

Frikstailers are the indisputable galactic emperors of tropical futurism and we’ve all known that for quite a few years now. However, their official full length debut has just landed on this galaxy’s digital retailers this week. It took them some time, yes, but let’s not be so arrogant and assume that we are the center of the universe and pleasing us with their music is their number one priority. Besides, as we know, time is bendable when you’re traveling through space.

This fourteenth installment of the ZZK mixtape series was put together by the Argentine cosmonaut duo to commemorate and promote the release of En Son De Paz (available now!) so you know what to expect: the best moments of the album lined up in a 30+ minute set with no random surprises or intergalactic cameos (except for the intro, by a Stephen Hawking impersonator).

You can try and stay on earth listening to the same old-school pop stuff, but resistance is futile, the future is here and Frikstailers are just giving you a glimpse of what’s to come. Embrace it.
