The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

It’s been a while since our last Brazilian music mixtape on this column. And this one here is different from all the ones we featured before since, well, it was put together by a record store owner (yes there are still some of those out there!) instead of a proper DJ (there’s no mixing, just simple transitions from song to song).

Joel Stones is a Brazilian living in New York who in an anachronistic and risky move opened Tropicalia In Furs, a brick-n-mortar record store in East Village that mainly sells Brazilian music… in vinyl.

This is a long set he mixed for Frank 151 magazine using records from his store. All funky and psychedelic Brazilian rarities for the most adventurous listeners. OK, some of them are not so rare if you’re a bit familiar with the genre, but if all you know about Brazilian music is “Magalenha” and “Nossa Nossa” then yes, in that case, these are all extreme rarities. But good ones.
