Your Mix Fix: K.Sabroso

The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: K.Sabroso

MIXTAPE: Ritmo Del Jungla

Welcome to the jungle! Nope, not Axel Rose’s jungle. Indianapolis’ K.Sabroso introduces us to the world of Latin jungle, a style that almost became kinda popular about a decade ago, but never really crossed over to the mainstream in the Latin music scene (with the exception of Brazil, were jungle and drum-n-bass ruled for quite a while).

We’ve introduced K.Sabroso not too long ago, as the producer of a remix for Miami’s Elastic Bond. As a DJ he says he specializes in mid-tempo soulful Latin house, but for this mixtape he tried to do something radically different that would distinguish him from the herd. So he went to the super up-tempo BPM of jungle and honestly I don’t think anybody else is currently exploring that style from a Latin perspective, so goal achieved.

The 35 minute long mixtape done specially for Remezcla (!) includes some classic boogaloo, a variety of Afro Latin rhythms, some Spanish rap and there’s even some Manu Chao there in the middle, all that over some 170 beats-per-minute breaks so you don’t even think about sitting down. Keep an eye on K.Sabroso for an upcoming full length release on Spring Strut Recordings, more info on his site.
