The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: Baile Tropical #44

Connecting Brazilian baile funk and tecno brega with the myriad other international expressions of global bass music (from ñu-cumbia to moombahton to Angolan kuduro) seems to be Patricktor4‘s main goal. Born and raised in Bahía, the DJ and producer probably doesn’t sleep much, since he’s constantly releasing new mixtapes, when he’s not making his own original tracks.

This set in particular includes a handful of tracks that Remezcla followers will definitely be familiar with, like the opening trap remix of Manu Chao done by our friend Freaky Philip and “Seda” by the one and only Zuzuka Poderosa toward the end. But I have a feeling the main purpose of this mixtape was to introduce Patricktor4’s latest single, “Cai Na Roda,” released weeks ago. Check it out!
