The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

MIXTAPE: Photo Romance Remezcla Exclusive Mix

An Afro-Parisian DJ by the name of Photo Romance made an exclusive moombahton mixtape just for us. Isn’t that some romance?

Moombahton has gone a long way in a very short time since its inception into the blogosphere and while it still doesn’t get mainstream recognition, it keeps new earning adepts, both sides of the Atlantic, in the global bass scene. It has also diversified into infinite other mini-subgenres with even sillier names (moombahstep, moombahcore, moombahsoul, etc) and unfortunately (for our subject of interest here at Remezcla) many of these strands had almost completely lost any sort of connection to the Latin source that originated moombahton.

Photo Romance covers a lot of these variations on the buzz-worthy moombah-multiverse and yes there’re a handfull of tracks there that will appeal to the Latino crowd (there’s some cumbahton, of course). Anyway, regardless of the portmanteau labels, it’s still a great mix with a lot of dancefloor-igniting potential, so leave your preconceptions behind and give it a try.
