The word mixtape has plenty of different interpretations. It used to be that mixtapes were actually DJ sets recorded on cassette tapes, but with the coming of the digital music age, the name remained the same, but the definition expanded. Nowadays, people call mixtapes many different things, some of which are not necessarily mixed and most of which were never taped. Here we try to cover them all. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Salón Acapulco

MIXTAPE: Fandango

Down for some disco? Guadalajara’s Salón Acapulco takes you back to the shinny disco ball era in this Fandango mix tape full of retro dance beats with subtle tropical modern twists. An elegant set with constant tempo and smooth transitions where they recreate that kitschy atmosphere of a cocaine-induced party in early ’80s Miami with lots of neon lights, fluorescent plastic pink flamingos and all. Oh, and a convertible Ferrari parked right out the door.

Salón Acapulco is the collective name used by DJ/producers Telésforo (who specializes in re-edits of old hits revisited for the current dance floor) and Iñigo (who specializes in funk and Italo disco) spinning in tandem. They are also part of the Mix Le Fun collective, along with other luminaries of the decadent Mexican nightlife like Lost Mapaches and Los Master Plus. If you like this stuff I strongly recommend you visit Mix Le Fun’s blog periodically for lots of free cool stuff.
