A mixtape can be many things, but one thing is for sure, a mixtape is more than just random songs put in a particular order. It’s about recontextualizing sounds, giving them a new meaning (sometimes very different from the original) by setting them side by side, or juxtaposed in ingenious ways with others. Best thing about mixtapes, most of them are FREE (!), and they’re a great way to discover new music from DJ’s around the globe. In this column, Juan Data gives you a worthy one every week.

DJ: Wonway Posibul

MIXTAPE: Makossa Classics Vol. 2

Radio host, DJ and casual MC Wonway Posibul has been holding it down in the Bay Area for a while, connecting in his mixes the soulful side of Latin music with its African ancestry, while making the eclectic crowd dance.

Part of the Latin Soul Brothers DJ crew, Wonway also hosts the Makossa parties in Oakland and San Francisco. Here we have the second volume to his highly regarded Makossa Classics series, an hour long DJ set where he pretty much covers all bases of the African diaspora, from afrobeat to reggae, passing through Brazilian samba and Colombian salsa.

Some of his selections are sure classics that have turned into cliches (Fruko’s “El Preso,” Sergio Mendes’ “Magalenha”) for the average Latin partygoer, but still they blend in smoothly with the lesser-known context that places them in a somewhat refreshing perspective.
