Puerto Rican singer and rapper Audri Nix has taken a bit of a musical hiatus since her slick, Overlord-produced song “Más” dropped back in 2016. Luckily for fans, she started teasing new music on her social media accounts over the last few months, and today, she’s dropped her comeback “Complicado,” an woozy track that puts her laid-back vocals front and center.

The look and feel of the track might be a throwback to the 90s, but its skipping hit-hats, steel drum twinkles, and a juddering bass are a refreshing update, bring the song out of that era and into trap territory. “Complicado’s” twitchy choices come courtesy of Audri Nix’s collaborators Take a Daytrip, the New York-based production duo who have worked with Lil Yachty, Quavo, Sheck Wes, and the Spanish trap-R&B maverick C. Tangana. Now, they add Audri to their roster and give her music a crisp production boost while leveraging the sleek style she refined on her last EP, El Nuevo Orden Vol. 1.

And while Audri has proven her flow on tracks like “Veneno” and “Inevitable,” she takes a smoother vocal route here that shows off her versatility. The chorus syncopates as Audri sings about a thorny relationship (it’s complicated, guys) and the skittering beat lets Audri tinker with her delivery and show off a side that at times reveal it could even work on poppier material.

She hasn’t said when we can expect more music, but “Complicado” is a solid indicator that she’s experimenting with her range of sound and melody while looping in new collaborators.
