Last month, we highlighted Coral Casino’s upcoming EP María as one of the releases we can’t wait to hear before the year ends. The duo has a track record of being helplessly romantic, but given their penchant for eclecticism, we weren’t sure what to expect. Perreo intenso? Delicate dancehall?
Today, we have a better idea of what their next chapter will sound like. It’s clear that the label María is coming out on – Mexican imprint Finesse Records – has been a major influence on the project. Their new single “Baby” is a slow-burning, baby-making R&B jam featuring slick, crystalline sub-bass-heavy production. Roque Ferrari is on lead vocals, with the duo’s usual auto-tune taking a backseat for this track.
Directed and produced by Finesse head honcho Teen Flirt (aka David Oranday), the video finds Ferrari reminiscing about moments of fading affection – tied to a chair, broken, bruised and waiting to be burned alive by his paramour. “Baby” paints love as a double-edged sword, one that can give you life – or burn you to ashes.
Catch Coral Casino at Mexico City’s SUDA party on Saturday, October 7 alongside Spanish dancehall artist Bad Gyal.
