Helado Negro Matches the Quiet Intensity of “Young, Latin & Proud” With an Abstract Video

With this video, Helado Negro‘s resilient but subtle anthem gets propelled into the “classics” folder.

A film by Michael Gersten, Peiter Hergert, and Daniel Moreno, the video’s simple execution is big on symbolism, without resorting to clichés. The clip is mostly animated, featuring handwritten lyrics and abstract figures that swirl before morphing into other shapes or disappearing. Fingers and hands (mostly covered in paint representing flags from Latin American countries) reach out and touch one another against a black background. There’s also a protagonist: a child represented both in the flesh as well as in silhouettes. With “Young, Latin & Proud,” Helado Negro (aka Roberto Carlos Lange) brings us a confident and quiet piece of art that speaks a message he believes in loudly.

Helado Negro will be touring the East Coast briefly with Brazilian Girls this week, so be sure to check them out if you’re in town:
