Mexican band Hello Seahorse! have been slowly releasing the four songs off Entretanto, their brand new EP, for several months now. Since last summer, they’ve been doling out slices of harmonic bliss in the form of an artsy four-part short film of the same name. There was just one left to share, and they’ve definitely saved the best for last.
“Algún Día (Alicia),” the opening track, might remind Hello Seahorse! faithful of the Bestia era, the album that gave the band their breakthrough back in 2009. The track is led by crunchy distorted guitars and accentuated with subtle acoustics, driving the song in and out of shoegaze territory with the help of some lush synth pads. The high-energy drums stand out by themselves, but when the cowbell and Latin percussion enters, the rhythmic section really shines through. And vocalist Denise Gutiérrez really kept things straightforward this time around, acknowledging her own mortality and begging her dear Alicia to come back in gorgeous simplicity.
