King Doudou’s New Mix is a Like a Fall Newsletter of Mutant Dembow

Think of the mixtape in 2016 as a version of a producer’s email newsletter. That’s definitely the case with the new “L’Automne Sera Chaud” (“Autumn Will Be Hot”) collection from France’s King Doudou.

The beatmaker has been all kinds of prolific this fall — last month alone he dropped an EP with Brazilian baile funk producer Omulu, a global mixtape survey of perreolandia, and a solo baile trap club track “Sal.” What’s he adding to his dialogue with this new release? According to Doudou, “This one is definitely darker than [last month’s “Canicule Mix.”] Dembow mutations, Nextel chirps, baile funk, club music, cop sirens, and trap are the soundtrack of my fall season.”

The sounds of trap and the surveillance state get their intro in this mix from new track “Fiebre en el Suelo,” from Doudou with Argentina’s cyber perreo producer Anakta and Bad Gyal, an emcee from Catalonia. And there’s some off-genre appearances that somehow make perfect sense — Baltimore hip-hop’s Rye Rye shows up with the glorious “Shake It To The Ground,” followed by a moment with E-40 and his “Choices (YUP).”

Basically, Doudou is reminding of us of his current experimentations, and his talent for drawing surprising correlations between tracks from across the world. We’re down for this bcc.
